Aldershot Town chairman John McGinty passed away on Saturday morning after losing his long and dignified battle with cancer at the age of 72.

He was a supporter of Aldershot FC and Aldershot Town for over 40 years after he moved to Alton from his native Ireland.

When the club ran into financial difficulties in 1992 John was heavilly involved in attempting to get the club out of trouble.

When the club folded in March 1992 John was given a life time membership to the newly formed Aldershot Town and became a director in June 92.

He was a popular figure at The Rec and on 6th November 2006 he became the chairman of the club, taking over from Karl Prentice.

He steadied the clubs finances and was behind the appointment of Gary Waddock as manager in June 2007 as the club won promotion back to the Football League in Waddock’s first season in charge.

Without John’s hardwork Aldershot Town wouldn’t be where they are today and he will always be remembered for what he gave to our football club.

RIP John, we will miss you.
