Gary Waddock made his second summer signing tonight, with the capture of right back Ben Herd.

Herd has been on trial at Aldershot since his release from Shrewsbury at the end of last season.

He started his career with Watford, signing professionally in 2004. However, he was released in 2005 without making a first team appearance for the Hornets.

After being released from Vicarage Road, he signed for Shrewsbury Town at the start of the 2005/06 season and went on to start in all but one of the Shrews’ games that season.

His 2006/07 season was hit by injury, but played in the League Two play off final at Wembley as Shrewsbury lost 3-1 against Bristol Rovers. He then missed just one match in the 2007/08 season and 2008/09 season, until his suspension in November. After this he only appeared five more times at The Prostar Stadium before being released.

Herd has made four appearances for The Shots in pre-season and has impressed enough to earn a two-year deal. This looks like it’ll be a good signing for Aldershot and it’s great that we appear to have finally filled the gap at right back.
