Phil Brown led his Southend side to a first win, their first in eight games overall, as they beat relegation threatened Aldershot on Tuesday night.

Aldershot went close through Peter Vincenti and Michael Rankine, and saw Dan Bentley save to deny Paul McCallum all in the first home as the hosts pushed for a desperately required win.

Southend, who hadn’t offered much attacking wise, did force the breakthrough late on though. Barry Corr (70) continued his goalscoring form finishing following a goalmouth scramble.

A 2-0 win was wrapped up when Britt Assombalonga (78), who had earlier been denied by the post, won and converted a penalty.

Defeat leaves Aldershot rooted to the foot of the League Two table, four-points from safety with just two games to play.
